Stephen Mehler was born in New York City. His early education focused on the sciences and he received a B.A. in Human Physiology and Anatomy with a minor in Chemistry in 1967 from Hunter College, City University of New York. After spending four years in the U.S. Airforce during the Vietnam conflict, Stephen resumed academic work and received an M.S in Natural Sciences, specializing in Human Ecology, in 1974 from San Jose State University.
Stephen had the opportunity to work on an archaeological excavation in the South of France in the summer of 1974. Working with Professor François Bordes of the University of Bordeaux, who was Director of Antiquities of Southeast France, Stephen developed a love of archaeology and geology. Having a strong interest in Ancient Egypt since he was a young man, Stephen then combined all his interests and received a second M.A. in Natural Sciences, specializing in Egyptology, from San Jose State University in 1978.
A series of events allowed Stephen to go to Egypt for three weeks in November 1992. Stephen met Abd’El Hakim Awyan (1926-2008), Egyptologist, archaeologist, senior tour guide, and Indigenous Wisdom Keeper, and became his main student and then colleague. Together, Stephen and Hakim founded the discipline of Khemitology, to differ strongly from academic Egyptology. With Hakim’s guidance, Stephen wrote two books, The Land of Osiris (Adventures Unlimited Press, 2001) and From Light into Darkness (Adventures Unlimited Press, 2005). Stephen has co-led twenty tours to Egypt from 1998 to 2018. Stephen lives in Lafayette, Colorado, with his wife, teacher and novelist Theresa Crater and their cat Cleopatra.
